Lagna Seca Spring Classic Saturday Round Up

The racing at the inaugural Spring Classic vintage car race and historic motorcycle exhibition became noticeably more spirited during the second of three days of action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. With qualifying complete, spots on the podium up for grabs, and a better feel for the track and the competition, drivers artfully toed the line between racing to win and preserving their historically significant machines.

Two drivers swept the races in their run groups. Patrick Byrne wheeled his 1965 Alfa Romeo GTA Corsa to back-to-back wins in 1966-1972 Trans-Am 2.5 Liter. Mac Mcgarry did likewise in Historic Stock Car with a dominant performance from his Kodiak #25 1989 Chevrolet Lumina.

Drivers from several groups felt the wrath of one of the most modern machines in the paddock, Travis Engen’s 2005 Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype. After winning the sole race contested in the 1983-2007 WSC – LMP/1966-1972 Can-Am class, he closed Saturday action with a win in the one-hour enduro that pitted his run group against 1973-1984 SCCA Production GT Cars and Historic Stock Car.

Dan Marvin charged from the No. 4 spot on the grid to win in Masters USA Historic Formula 1. Other winners include John Delane (1967-1972 Formula B, Race 1), Andrew Wait (1967-1972 Formula B, Race 2), Jeffrey Abramson (1973-1984 SCCA Production GT Cars), Bill Ockerlund (1966-1972 Trans-Am, Race 1), Forrest Straight (1966-1972 Trans-Am, Race 2), Dalmo de Vasconcelos (1973-1979 Formula Atlantic, Race 1), and Danny Baker (1973-1979 Formula Atlantic, Race 2).
