Toleman’s [car] Delivery Service sponsored club racers before graduating to European Formula 2 in 1978. South African Rory Byrne developed Ralts in ’79, when compatriot Rad Dougall (still in an old March) and veteran Brian Henton won once apiece. For 1980 Toleman Motorsport fielded its own TG280 chassis, designed by Byrne around Hart 420R engines and Pirelli radial tyres, signing BP-backed Britons Stephen South and Derek Warwick. When South was injured in a Can-Am shunt Henton was recalled and won the crown denied in ’79 by disqualification at Enna. One-two in Thruxton’s opener, Brian won three races to Derek’s one over the season.
