Brothers Erwin and Manfred Kremer’s team in Cologne evolved some sensational versions of Porsche’s iconic 911 for Group 5 silhouette racing. A tubeframe 935K3 won the 1979 Le Mans 24 Hours driven by Klaus Ludwig and the Whittington brothers. The most colourful Kremer 935, however, was the Vaillant [central heating boilers] example in which Alsacian Bob Wollek finished runner-up to Rolf Stommelen in the DRM. I picked up this memento at the hideously wet ’77 Nurburgring Bilstein Super Sprint finale. Four decades later the magnificent machine is fielded in Historic events by Eberhard Baunach, now owner of the Kremer business.
