Series newcomer Jonathan Kennard put his Arrows A3 on pole in FIA Masters Historic Formula One qualifying at Silverstone today, pipping the regular front runners Michael Lyons and Nick Padmore to the top slot in the 20-minute session.

“I had five laps to shakedown the car before we came here,” said Kennard, the 2004 Formula Palmer Audi champion, “and this is my first race weekend for over a year so we were really just looking to shake the rust off, and I’m surprised to be right up there. There are some really good guys at the front of the grid and it is going to be ablate to keep Michael Lyons and Nick Padmore behind.”

Lyons was being canny with his tyres and only used one set for qualifying unlike some of his rivals, which could put him in a strong position for race two on Sunday.
